HotPocketHPE's writings

This site exists as a repository for me to post various essays on video games, some of which were originally posted on Backloggd or Cohost (RIP).

Though I have been playing games for my entire life, Monster Hunter ignited my original passion for games analysis. It's still a series that's close to my heart, but its flaws are more apparent to me after some years, and I don't care for the newer games much. I love classic Doom, though I'm not a particularly skilled or knowledgeable player. It's an astounding game with a inspiring and active scene.

Most of my writing relates to gameplay systems just because it's what I can analyze well, but what most connects with me now is the synthesis of gameplay systems with other elements into a higher whole. This is hard to do, so examples are rare and standout ones even rarer (though many games create this quality in a tacit/passive way). Some of my favorites are The Last Guardian, Hellsinker, Rain World, and Immortal Defense.

These days I play whatever interests me, mostly old games. I appear on the Beach Gen podcast (inactive) and the Regen podcast (active) with some friends.
